Rooted in technology and innovation, STX is most well known for its success with lacrosse, golf and field hockey equipment. STX has drafted on its vast experience to enter the hockey market. The Surgeon 500 stick has been described as a Precision Instrument and was designed for the elite level player that wants to feel the puck on their stick with the ability to release it quickly and accurately. The Precision Flex Shot Profile is a dual flex profile that either allows for that quick realease, or allows the stick to load energy higher up the shaft to add power to your shot.
One of the main areas of focus for STX hockey was to have the balance point of the stick as far up the shaft as possible. They have engineered the Surgeon 500 in such a way that doesn't sacrifice weight or durability, but still has one of the highest balance points on the market. This results in a nice blade-light feel to the stick. The shaft is considered to have a square shape with double concave walls, however, the corners have additional contouring to them which makes the corners feel a little less-pronounced than some of the other square shaped sticks out there. 12K carbon fiber is a high quality carbon fiber weave that is known for its excellent stress management properties and is the main material used in the senior and intermediate shaft of the Surgeon 500. The shaft is finished with a matte-like grip coating which offers a lighter grip feel that some of the other traditional grip applications on the market.
The Surgeon 500 doesn't really have a visible taper. It uses spear construction, which means that the shaft extends internally to the heel of the blade.
Since this stick is about precision, the Surgeon 500 features a stiff blade design. Deliberately softer than what you would find in the Stallion 500, because the softer blade allows you to feel the puck better and enhances precise puck control. Internally, the blade has a dual rib and foam core construction, while the external blade construction features a 12K carbon fiber wrap.
If you're looking for a precision instrument that allows for laser-like passes and enhanced shot accuracy, then the Surgeon 500 stick from STX could be for you.

2 games in and this stick has bumped my ribcor to the backup position. Flex points and similar to the ribcor, but slightly higher allowing for much easier loading. Controlability is again, excellent. I use a whip flex and have found it much easier to recieve hard passes on this as the stick doesn't bounce back nearly as much as it has with other sticks i've used. The only complaint I have is the finish is very...different. I am not at all a fan of grip finishes, while this is not as tacky as a bauer or reebok, it is taking some getting used to. IMO if STX releases this stick with a matte finish, no further changes required. Stick is awesome, durability over the long term is my only remaining question.Review by Infil (Posted on 7/24/2016)
great stick handling control, amazing feel for accurate passes and pin-point wrist shotsReview by pecty (Posted on 7/24/2016)
the only con, it feels like the grip coating wore away in only a few uses
This was a gift that arrived and I wasn't too sure how I would like it. I definitely judged the book by it's cover on this one. I'm not a trend follower nor am I that flashy when it comes to hockey. I like a good stick with some big flex but also something that is going to be able to take a beating playing defense. This stick is awesome for carrying the puck up. I'm not a pro nor am I a beginning however I do know a good stick from a wannabe and this will be next purchase if something were to happen to the one I have now.Review by Nikki (Posted on 7/24/2016)
Because STX is a lacrosse company, I have to admit that I was a bit skeptical about the sticks and equipment that were coming out for hockey. My friend had purchased a Surgeon 500 and let me borrow it for a couple morning skates, I was hooked! After using it a few times I knew that I needed my own. The surgeon 500 has done wonders for me, helping me score lots of ginos and dishing out plenty assists. This stick just has an amazing balance which also makes it feel incredibly light in your hands. If you are looking for a good durable performing stick, look no further. The surgeon 500 is the way to go.Review by P. Bardington III (Posted on 7/24/2016)
i wasn't sure about this stick because i didn't like the apx's, which have the dual flex points that this has. i decided to try it since it got marked down and i've had pretty much every other stick. after just a few shots this stick is one of my favorites. my shot goes exactly where i want it to every time and handling the puck feels much better. it also flexes a ton which i love. also it is about the same weight as most other top of the line sticks, but its perfect balance makes it feel like the lightest stick i've ever used. this thing is the real deal.Review by adam (Posted on 7/24/2016)
