Details

The Tacks lineup is all about maximum coverage and optimal protection and the Ultra Tacks shin guard definitely delivers with the introduction of D3O foam technology. This innovative foam is built into the Ultra Tacks knee caps to help provide better shock absorption against both hard and soft impacts. So how does it all work? D3O smart foam keeps its soft consistency to absorb energy from low intensity impacts and instantly hardens for any higher intensity impacts. The molecules in this foam are continuously free flowing, which allows the “smart material” to remain soft and flexible, but on impact, the molecules lock together to absorb and dissipate the energy from the impact. After the impact, the molecules return to their soft and flexible state. This unique molecular structure offers cutting edge pro level protection perfect for blocking shots, warding off stick slashes, and protecting the wearer from big hits.

For stability, CCM uses a nice thick elastic strap for the lower part of the shin, and then they use their wrap lock, which is a neoprene and webbing strap that wraps all the way around to the front of the shin to give nice stability behind the knee. With the wrap lock, the shin is “locked“ securely to the leg, tape is pretty much unnecessary with this feature. A huge plus about the fit of the shin is how well it actually stays in place. Here at Hockey Monkey we like to call it a “centered” fit, because when you put it on it really lines up nicely to the center of the leg and stays there. Sometimes shin guards will veer off on one side or the other, but in the case of the Ultra Tacks, when it is put on it stays where it is supposed to be.

For additional protection, removable thigh protection is available so if you aren’t into that extra pad above the knee you can go right ahead and easily remove it. The Tacks molded armor foam can be found around the peripheral of the pad around the tough plastic shin shell. Moving down to the calf wrap, you’ve got that Tacks molded armor foam again with a plastic insert , and exposed molded HD foam on the other side of the calf as well so you can get really nice protection on the backside of the pad as well. A removable anatomical liner made with premium mesh lines the shin. It features comfort foam and a nice thick knee donut to cushion collisions and falls.

CCM’s Ultra Tacks shin guards provide all the protection you need to perform under pressure. If you are looking for a solid shin guard with a great centered fit, we highly recommend you check out the Ultra Tacks shin guards, you will not be disappointed.

To fit properly:

  • Determine the level of play.
  • Shinguards are measured best while the player is sitting.
  • Measure from the center of the kneecap to the top of the skate boot.
  • Match the player’s shin size to the inches of shinguard.

Shinguards, which are either too long or too short, will result in the knee or instep being exposed and unprotected. Shinguards should be secured with shinguard straps or tape, never tight hockey stockings.

The ultra tacks is the best shinguard I've used

I use the Ultra Pro version which doesn't have the additional padding above the knee cap that I dislike. It's an amazing shinguard, super protective. I've taken countless 90+ mph shots and never felt a thing. D30 is king

Comfortable and Protective

I got these these pads after watching and reading many reviews on them. Prior to this I was using some pro-stock Reeboks which I loved. I'm a big guy at 6'2 210 and these are the first shin guards in which the calf guards actually wrap entirely around my calf, and the actual calf strap is nice and wide/heavy-duty velcro. They are a little bulky and don't really sit well stacked on top of each other in a hockey bag. I found the top strap to be pretty uncomfortable so i cut it off and just use sock tape to really secure them.

Great shin pads

I have patellar tendonitis and Osgood-Schlatters so I have bad knees now i struggle to find good protective shin pads. I bought the Bauer supreme 150 because as weird as it may seem those were the only only ones that fit me at the time. But I made my Varsity team so i needed more protection so i initially went to bauer and tried all of their shin pads on then I tried on all of Easton. Still no luck then I saw the Ultra tacks and I tried them on and immediately I loved them. they are very light weight and protective. I have blocked multiple shots at the Varsity level and they have held up. The orange pad inside the knee hole on these shin pads prevent your knee from hitting and bouncing off (which for me is extremely painful). I would recommend these to anyone GREAT product.

Great shinguard.

After using the Reebok 20K Pro shinguards, these CCM Ultra shin guards combine high quality construction, great protection, low profile and low bulk, calf protection, and great fit. Strap retention is excellent. Over the course of many games and practices, I have felt very little in the lower legs. The only cons I have found is they seem somewhat heavy. The removeable liner soaks up perspiration, bur dries quickly. The calf wrap chould be adjustable like on the 20Ks. The close fit works well for under the tongue wear. However, I cannot wear it over the tongue due to the same low profile. They have held up very well.

Do Not Buy!!!!!!!

I have 4 Boys that play Ice hockey. Just as a coincidence 3 needed new shin guards at the same time. Two pair broke in less then 1 month of use. CCM replaced one pair via warranty and they also broke, this time in only three uses. All of them broke in the same place, the right knee cap cracked. CCM did not offer a warranty for the other pairs. They all failed under normal use. These were supposed to be the highest quality / performance model. 4 pair 3 broken right knee caps. That seems to me to be a good indication of a flaw in craftsmanship. CCM/Reebok should review quality control. I play as well my shin guards are going strong 10 years running. Needless to say I am disappointed and will now shop for other brands.
